Bibliography Preparation

A works cited list (or bibliography) lists all of the resources consulted during the preparation of a paper.  It should appear on a separate page at the end of your paper. You must give credit to the authors whose ideas you are using.  If you have a source not covered by the examples below, ask the librarian for assistance.

E-Mail

  • Sender of E-mail message <sender’s E-mail address>. Subject line of the message. Date of message (day, month, year). E-mail recipient <recipient’s E-mail address>.

  • Example: Smith, James. jsmith@yahoo.com. “RE: Hopi Indian Legends.” 9 September 2003.  Ruth Jones rjones@hotmail.com.

Print Sources: MLA Style

Books with one author: (If there is no author: Begin with the title of the book.)
  • Author (last name first) Title. City of publication:  Publisher, Copyright date.
  • Example:  Mead, Marion.  Eleanor: A Biography.  New York:  E.P. Dutton, 1990.

Books with two authors:

  • First author (last name first), second author (first name first); see example below:
  • Example:  Jones, Ann, and Ty Vin.  Indian Mythology. New York: Wilson, 2002.

Books with an editor, but not an author:

  • Editor (last name first), ed.  Title.  City of publication: Publisher, date.
  • Example: Sherod, Jane, ed. Gold in Mexico. New York: Dennison, 2000.

An article in a reference work:

  • “Title of article.” Reference Book. Editor. City of Publication, date.
  • Example: “Expressionism.”  The Oxford Companion to English Literature.  Ed. Mary Drabble. New York: Oxford Univ. Press, 2002. 

One volume of a multi-volume reference work:

  • Author or Editor.  Title of Book  Vol. No. City of Publication: Publisher, date.
  • Example:  Wellek, Rene. Criticism, 1750-1950.  Vol. 5. New Haven: Yale, 1986.
  • Note: Include any article titles before the book’s title.

Magazine articles from magazines:

  • Author (last name first). “Title of article.”  Magazine  Day Month Year: pages.
  • Example: Wood, C.E. “Gone Are the Wins.” Sports Illustrated  4 July. 2003: 43-44.
  • Note: Monthly magazines are the same except there is no day of the month.

Newspaper article:

  • “Title of article.”  Newspaper  Day Month Year, Section: pages.
  • Example: “Amazing Amazon.” New York Times 12 March 2002, Sec. 4:  E23.

Encyclopedic article:

  • Author (if available).  “Article title,”  Encyclopedia, copyright or edition, Vol. No., page numbers.
  • Example: McGrath, William. “Vienna,” The World Book Encyclopedia, 2003, Vol. 20, pp. 362-363.

Personal Interview:

  • Interviewee’s name. Interviewee’s title.  “Personal Interview,” date.
  • Example:  Myers, Linda. Former foreign correspondent, Chicago Tribune. Personal interview, March 25, 2003.

Videotape or DVD

  • Title, format, date. City: Producer.
  • Example:  Legacies of the Sixties, VHS, 1991.  Washington, D.C.: WETA.
