THE VOTES ARE IN AT HILL COUNTRY ELEMENTARY
Bandera, Texas
● March 5, 2008
With results
that virtually duplicated the results of Super Tuesday
in Texas, the students at Hill Country Elementary cast
their votes for the next Presidential nominee in a
campus wide mock election. “Unlike the actual primary,
the Presidential candidates were grouped together”,
explained election organizer and 5th grade
teacher Jacob Tijerina. “We just want the kids to
experience voting for the first time.”
According to
Tijerina, the students at Hill Country have been very
interested in the election this year, so his fifth grade
class decided to arrange a school wide election. Every
student in his class had a specific duty such as poll
worker, vote counter, messenger, and ballot box
official. This gave the students the opportunity to
learn how the voting process works while teaching them
the importance of teamwork and planning.
All of the
students at the school, from Kindergarten through 5th
grade, had the opportunity to vote. Once the 485 ballots
were tallied, there was only an eight vote difference
between first and second place which showed the students
the importance of each and every vote. Hillary Clinton
captured 27% of the votes with Barack Obama and John
McCain each receiving 26% of the vote. Rounding out the
totals were Mike Huckabee with 15% and Ron Paul with 6%.
