HILL COUNTRY ELEMENTARY STUDENT A REAL HERO
Bandera, Texas
● February 26, 2008
If you’re
holding out for a hero, you don’t need to venture any
farther than Hill Country Elementary School in Pipe
Creek. Last week, as the lunch period was winding down
for all the kids in third grade, Jesse Zimmel was
finishing off his second slice of pizza. After Zimmel
swallowed a big bite of pie, some cheese and pepperoni
made its way down the wrong pipe. Zimmel grabbed his
throat and motioned to his friend Connor Chesshir,
another third grade student. When Chesshir realized that
Zimmel was choking, he got up from his seat and
performed the Heimlich Maneuver on his classmate like a
real pro. Chesshir’s efforts dislodged the food blocking
Zimmel’s throat which allowed him to take some deep
breaths and calm down. Chesshir told campus staff that
he learned about the Heimlich by reading the poster
hanging on the wall in the school cafeteria.
“Every
day since I was in kindergarten I would read the choking
poster while standing in line in the cafeteria”,
explained Chesshir. “It all just came back to me when I
saw my friend choking”.
