BANDERA ISD COMPLIES WITH USDA ADMINISTRATIVE HOLD
Bandera, Texas
● February 22, 2008
A few weeks
ago, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
put an administrative hold on ground beef supplied by
Westland Meat Company. The Texas Department of
Agriculture asked area school districts, including
Bandera ISD, to discontinue use of the Westland product.
School districts participating in the federally funded
National School Lunch Program receive commodity products
from the USDA. As part of its government commodity
allocation, Bandera Independent School District did
receive a small amount of meat from Westland Meat
Company. The District immediately isolated and stopped
using this product. There is no indication that anything
was wrong with the meat that was shipped to the
cafeterias in Bandera. There have also been no reports
of ill effects through any previous consumption.
“The safety of our students and staff is our
number one priority,” stated district spokesperson Brad
Domitrovich. “Serving safe, nutritious food is our top
goal.”
Bandera ISD School Nutrition Services
Department will continue to be in complete compliance
with all state and federal guidelines regarding food
served in our school cafeterias. No more meat from that
facility will be shipped to any of Bandera schools, and
the district has removed all of the meat that remained
in storage.
