PHYSICAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT PARENT INFORMATION
Bandera, Texas
● January 25, 2008
Bandera ISD PE teachers,
coaches, and administrators met this past week to
discuss Fitnessgram, the new physical fitness assessment
required by the state of Texas beginning this school
year.
This assessment is
composed of several measures of fitness:
-
aerobic capacity
(measured by a one mile run/walk or a paced activity
at elementary)
-
muscle strength and
endurance (measured by short sessions of pushups,
curl ups and trunk lifts)
-
flexibility (measured
by a shoulder stretch; and body mass composition,
generated through height and weight data)
Senate Bill 530 passed in
the last legislative session mandates this assessment
for all public school students in grades 3-12 once a
year. Individual student reports will generate data that
either identifies the student as “in the fitness zone”
or “needs improvement.” Reports generated will be sent
home with the students for parent information. Yearly
reports will allow parents to evaluate their student’s
fitness over time. Compiled district statistics will be
reported to the state at a later date.
A parent information
session on this new assessment will be conducted on
February 7th at 6:30 PM in the Bandera ISD
Board Room located at 815 Pecan Street. Bandera ISD
Athletic Trainer Mary Bolan will present basic
information on the background of the assessment as well
as showing a DVD demonstrating the actual assessment
activities. Fitnessgram assessments will only be used as
a method of tracking overall student fitness and will
not impact student grades. All students will be
encouraged to participate in this important process.
