Information Regarding the Presidential Address to Students

Bandera, Texas ● September 3, 2009

In a letter to school principals from the United States Department of Education, Secretary Arne Duncan announced that on September 8, 2009, President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to students on the importance of education. According to the letter, Secretary Duncan stated that the President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. The address will be broadcast live on the White House web site and may be used instructionally in Bandera ISD classrooms.

Bandera ISD is committed to providing access to learning opportunities, but it is also our practice to provide parents with the right to remove their children temporarily from a classroom if an instructional activity conflicts with the parents’ beliefs. Parents who wish to exercise this right during the viewing of the Presidential address (either live or recorded) must notify their campus principal in writing by Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 8:00 AM.
